11 Dec Separators

As scouts, we look for separators. What does this ballplayer do that separates him from the pack: bat speed, pop, power breaking ball, foot speed, arm speed, hand eye coordination, arm strength, brute strength, elite instincts… the list can go on and on. I can spot these traits with my trained eye, but there is a separator that I cannot visually identify. That trait is determination.
Players, I want you to pay close attention to your teammates from age ten through the end of your senior year. The best ten year old doesn’t always turn out to be the best eighteen year old. Talent is necessary, but the determination that it takes to show up each day is what drives you to develop your talent. Those who stick it out, ride the ups & downs, and continue to show up everyday, are the ones who will have the opportunity to further their career in this game.
Players will eliminate themselves from contention by simply eliminating themselves from the roster. They stop showing up. If you want it, be determined enough to ‘post’ every single day. It will pay off in many ways…
